Summary

Site of Anglo-Saxon burial ground was found during the creation of a bowling green in 1913. A number of graves were discovered and two iron spearheads and seven beads were the only finds preserved at the site. No subsequent finds have been made.

The site lies on the lower south facing scarp slope of the North Downs. OD 110-115m.

[TQ 80665781] Anglo Saxon Burial Ground [NR] (1) A Saxon cemetery found in the grounds of Thurnham Friars [See illust A0/61/286/6] in 1913 during the making of a bowling green. Although a number of burials were disturbed and a quantity of grave furniture discovered, two iron spearheads and seven beads were the only finds preserved. (2) Site of bowling green confirmed. No subsequent finds are known to have been made, and the present whereabouts of the spearheads, etc., was not determined. (3) Additional bibliography. (4)
