The Canterbury UAD states that this was a Geo. Beer & Rigden/Fremlins/Whitbread inn.
This inn was first licensed in 1837 to James Bassett and in 1846 to Ann Bassett (Spinster).
The Black Horse was listed in Bagshaw's Directory in 1847 and was purchased by Rigdens in 1854 for £300.
Until the early 1930s the Black Horse was only No. 12 Orchard Street and during that time No. 11 was added to make a larger inn and the front of the inn was altered. The frontage of the Black Horse certainly included No. 11 and 12 Orchard Street by 1939. Further alterations have recently been made to the interior of the inn. Mr Stan Tapsell whose father was innkeeper for a time after 1945 remembers the inn when it was only half its present size.
The records indicate that there has only ever been one inn in Orchard Street.
