2. A timber-framed building with plaster infilling very much restored, the ground floor faced in red brick. The 1st floor oversails. 2 storeys and attics. Tiled roof with 2 hipped dormers. 2 mod rn casement windows.
Nos 51 to 66 (consec) form a group.

The Canterbury UAD states that this is a Beer & Rigden/Fremlins/Whitbread inn.
There was dwelling house on the site in the 16th century, owned by Robert Budden a woollen draper. In the middle of the 17th century an Ale licence was applied for and it was known as Ale house in St. Dunstan's.
The Unicorn was listed in the Licensing List in 1692 and in the following year the Billeting List offered the inn 4 soldiers.
In 1763 it was sold to Philip Watson, a brewer in Longport but twice in the 18th century the Unicorn earned a reputation for being a 'Bawdy house'.
The Unicorn was sold to Beer and Rigden in the ealry 20th century. Some five ex-innkeepers still visited the unicorn during the 1980's.
