The Canterbury UAD states that this is a Tomson & Wotton/Whitbread inn.

This inn appears in a deed which was in the possession of the brewers, Tomson and Wotton, dated 1676 and it is called, The Dog's Head in the Pot (From Mr Endersby''s papers).

It appears in the Licensing List for 1692 and in 1693 the Billeting List for soldiers allocated the inn one sergeant. It appears to have been re-built in c. 1815.

Several years before the inn closed visitors sat on barrels to drink. The Oporto Tavern closed in 1969. It is now (2002) a shop - Welby's Bazaar.
