No 33 (The Brewer's Delight Inn) TR 1557 NW 5/290

2. C18. 2 storeys stuccoed. Half-nipped tiled roof with 1 dormer, 3 sashes with glazing bars intact. Ground floor has a C19 pubfront and a doorcase with vestigial stone hood and 2 scroll brackets. The rear elevation is weatherboarded.
Nos 33 to 44 (consec) and No 46 form a group.

The Canterbury UAD states that this inn was previously a Whitbread/Shepherd Neame House. There was a pub of this name in Dover Street in 1837. That was first licensed to Henry Wraight as a beer retailer. By 1847 he had moved and opened the Brewers Delight in Broad Street. The Inn was remodelled in 1993.

In 1973 the landlord of this inn was interviewed by the Kent Messenger. Mr Jack Riding said: 'It’s the most sporting pub in Canterbury. Our activities include fishing, darts, football, bat and trap and cricket. The pub has always been renowned for sport. In 1950 it won all the sporting cups in this area. This unique record has never been accomplished before or since'. Mr Riding added, 'One thing that both my wife and I stand very firmly against is swearing. There is no need for it and I won't tolerate it in my pub'.
