Description from record TQ 82 NW 2 :
(TQ 84022779) Lossenham (A.D. 1666) (NAT) Moat (NR) (1) Lossenham Manor House, which is surrounded by a moat (2) was built by Adrian Moore in 1666, this date appearing on a stone near the entrance. The front was built in the late 19th c. (3) "Losenham: Part of a moat appears to remain on the west side of the site of the Carmelite priory". (TQ 82 NW 3) (4) 16/6 Lossenham, Grade III. A house of Carmelite Friars was found here in 1241 by Sir Thomas Aliber or Fitz Ancher. It was dissolved in 1536 and none of it survives. (TQ 82 NW 3). The present bdg. is of 2 parallel ranges. The back range is timber-framed and was built by Sir John Colepepper in 1628 but has been refaced with red brick in the C.18. The front range dates from the C.18, but the easternmost w. bay was probably added in the early C.19. 2s. and attic. 4 w. facing south. Red brickon a stone base. The easternmost w. bay has a parapet. The remainderhas a stone stringcourse and an eaves cornice of brick cogging and moulded wood, except the centre w. bay which projects and has a stone stringcourse above the first fl. also, and a blunt C.19 gable contining 2 attic ws. and 1w. space. 1 gabled dormer on each site of this. Mansard tiled roof. Vertical gl. bars only intact. Wide stone porch with Doric cols. and triglyph frieze. At the south east corner is a red brick wall at right angles to the house having a brick pier at each end and one in the centre, all surmounted by ball caps. (5) Lossenham manor-house is as described by Authority 5 and is of little architectural interest. The moat remains, comprise the waterfilled SEcorner and the S arm which can be traced past the present house. Lossenham Manor predates the Priory, so the moat is probably connectedwith it, rather than the Priory. Published survey 25" correct. (6) TQ 840275 Lossenham, Newenden listed in the county checklist of moatedsites in Kent - December 1979. (7)
