Summary

A possible Roman cemetery has been found since 1835 at Buckwell, Seal, Sevenoaks. Groups of pottery, each accompanied by a glass vessel (lachrymatory), were discovered "some years since". Some of the pottery is in the British Museum.

[TQ 5768 5720] Roman remains found A.D. 1835 (NAT) (1) Groups of pottery, each accompanied by a glass vessel (a lachrymatory), were discovered "some years since", extending diagonally S.E.-N.W. across a field on the St. Clere estate when it was broken up to plant hops. Some of the pottery is in the British Museum. (2) [Plan supports O.S. siting.] A letter from B. Harrison to R.A. Smith, 18.7.1917, notes an immense number of Roman remains found about 1835 in a field named Buckwell - a Roman cemetery. (2-3) No further information on this Roman Burial ground was gained and the present whereabouts of the finds is not known. Buckwell Field (Centred TQ 5760 5717)(a) is under permanent pasture and there is no record or knowledge of subsequent discoveries. (But see TQ 55 NE 23).(4)
