Description from record TQ 94 SE 4:
(TQ 97964191) St. Mary's Church (NAT) (1) A 14th century church with the exception of the nave aisles, and the clerestory which are 15th century. The church was restored in 1875. (2) St. Mary's Church. In regular use for divine worship. TQ 97954188. See GP AO/61/195/4 from S. (3) Checked and correct. (4) 5272 Church of St Mary, The Street (north-west side), Great Chart. TQ 9741 24/1 14.2.67. Grade 1. Built of ragstone. C13 chancel with C15 north and south chapels. C14 nave with C14 north aisle and C15 south aisle, C15 south porch with a west tower which is a land mark for a wide area. The jambs of the vestry door are early Norman, circa 1080. C15 font. Rood stairs. C19box pews. The churchyard has some C18 stone headstones with cherub, skull or hourglass motifs. Paths in the churchyard are paved with stone pavements of Bethersden marble. (5) St Mary, from the outside all looks quite normal, apparently all Perpendicular. But inside there is unusual equality of nave and chancel. The clerestory continues for one bay east of the chancel archand the rood screen stood east and not west of the chancel arch. The explanation no doubt lies in the churches prehistory - a few voussoirsof Caen stone in the walling survive from Norman work. There was a fire before 1472 when James Goldwell, Bishop of Norwich, obtained an indulgence for restoring the church. This work was probably complete by 1475 although the clerestory and aisle window maybe as late as circa 1500. (6) Additional bibliography - not consulted. (7 8)

It has been suggested that this was a pest(ilence) house (11)
