TR 04 NE HASTINGLEIGH
2/74 Coombe Manor (formerly listed as Big Coombe 27.11.57 Farmhouse)
GV II
House. C14 and 1871. Timber framed, exposed and restored with plaster infill, clad to rear in part with tile hanging, and extended with red brick. Plain tiled roofs. Hall house plan with cross wings (the service wing rebuilt 1871). One storey and attic hall with two storey cross wing with jetty returned on dragon post. Hipped cross wing roof, with truncated stack projecting at end left, stack to centre right and at end right a 2 storey C19 block, with plinth, plat and hipped roof with 4 glazing bar sashes on each floor, the framed portion with mullioned and transomed windows, as also to central hipped dormer. Four centred arched C20 plank door in raking porch to centre right. Interior: base cruck hall truss survives (1 of 2 or 3 only in Kent) with curved braces and with hollow chamfered moulding extending from base of crucks, along braces and to massive moulded tie beam, with tall moulded octagonal crown post. Rafters largely replaced mid C20, some - smoke blackened originals remain. The wall adjoining the house to the north has some reset stonework (the house had a stone Gothic porch pre 1930's) which appears C19, but may reflect an earlier stone built house, added to by the framed wing, then replaced by the C19 brick wing. (See E.W. Parkin, Wye Local History Magazine).
