Monument details

HER Number:TQ 75 NW 17
Type of record:Monument
Name:Iron Age cinerary urns, pottery, and brooches from former Tassell's Quarry, Alllington

Summary

Iron Age cinerary urns were found in what was formerly known as Tassell's Quarry in 1860. Items in Maidstone Museum from Allington include bowls, urns, a cup, a large open dish, and fibulae. A burial group from this site is not likely to be earlier than the second quarter of the 1st century A.D. and the whole of the finds appear to be later than the beginning of the Christian era. Also in Maidstone Museum are pieces of 1st century A.D. Belgic and imported ware, and part of a possibly Romano British sickle.

(2) A collection of pottery from Allington, in Maidstone Museum comprises: seven beadrim bowls, three of which were used as cinerary urns; a degenerate pear-shaped pedestal urn [context infers several], a cordoned cup of Mont Bevray type, a large open dish, two or three fibulae of the first half of the 1st c. A well attested burial group from this site consists of a cordoned urn, a plate with imitation stamp - a local copy of a Belgic type, and a fibula [illust. of a bow-shaped fibula] This group is not likely to be earlier than the second quarter of the 1st c. A.D. and the whole of the finds appear to be later than the beginning of the Christian era. (3-4) The Authority 1 sitings fall within long-disused gravel-workings formerly known as Tassel's Quarries. On display in Maidstone Museum are 15 pieces of 1st c. A.D. Belgic and imported ware and in store are 10 or 12 further pieces also part of a ? RB sickle. All are labelled as having come from Tassel's Quarries, and include the pieces listed by Authority 2.
