DATED 1520. 2 STOREYS RED BRICK. SLATE ROOF. 2 SASHES WITH GLAZING BARS INTACT. RAINWATER HEAD. 19C BAR FRONY AND LEFT SIDE. CARRIAGE ENTRANCE.
The Canterbury UAD states that this inn was previously owned by Fremlins/Free House/Courage.
Mr Enderby, in his lecture to the Canterbury archaeological society in 1952, quoted a deposition of William Glydwyn who was a witness in a case of robbery which took place in 'Stower Street' in 1553. It mentions the 'Cardinalle's Hat'.
The Cardinal's Cap was licensed in a list in 1692 and the Billeting List for soldiers in 1693 asked the inn to take 8 soldiers.
The deeds of the property mention the tenement being rebuilt about 1821 - the date 1820 was on the photograph taken in 1965.
Among the innkeepers was Robert Rouse in 1792. William Wilds in 1795; James Chambers in 1854 and Ann Chambers in 1867. The Cardinal's Cap closed as an inn in 1975 and became Rosie's Diner. It is now an inn again.
