A deep sewer trench cut down the full width of this narrow street revealed a succession of Medieval deposits. The bulk of these consisted of rubble, soil and domestic rubbish dumped along the margins of the river estuary; this provides clear evidence for the reclamation of this area in the later medieval period. Quite possibly, this reclamation work reflects an expansion in the size of the town during this period. There were a number of occupation layers between these consolidation layers which yielded pottery ranging in date from A.D 1150-1250. A waterlogged organic deposit at the base of the recorded sequence produced Norman pottery (1-3)
