A watching brief of the laying of a pipeline along New Romney High Street in 1995 recorded that a previous road surface and sand layer possibly relating to the flood of 1287 were encountered along the length of the pipe trench. This agrees with a medieval map showing the road in the same location as it is today. Below the sand layer a total of 98 sherds of pottery were recovered. 59 sherds (included.1 which was an almost complete jug and several of probable south west French origin) dated to 1225-1250/75 these came from TQ 0664 2496 to TQ 0663 2495 and TQ 0653 2488. 17 sherds were dated to 1150-1225/50, these included 1 sherd probably from north France and were found between TQ 0663 2495 and TQ 0652 2487. The final 2 sherds were dated 1175-1250 and came from around TQ 0660 2493. Nearly approximately half the length of the pipeline was attended by the watching brief while the works were in progress.
