Broadstairs - extent of settlement as shown on the 1st and 2nd Edition O/S maps. The 1st Edition map shows that the town was gradually spreading inland in all directions. Churches, large villas, schools and hotels were built. However, the 2nd Edition map shows that there was a considerable expansion inland and to the north and south of the town. Not only were the new residential areas built but there were also a Railway Station, Water Works and Gas Works together with a number of Convalescent Homes.
