Site of St Peter's Orphan & Convalescent Home, Lanthorne Road, Broadstairs as shown on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Edition O/S maps. It would appear that the building was demolished in 1953.
The Home was founded in 1866 by Catherine Tait, the wife of Archibald Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury, in response to a cholera epidemic in the East End of London which left many dead and their children orphaned. The first Home was in Ratcliffe Highway, Stepney. In 1870 the Home moved to Lanthorne Road, Broadestairs because the premises in Fulham had become too small. The Sister of the Community of St Peter who had previously run the Orphanage relinquished their involvment in 1878. By 1907 the Home accommodated 80 girls who were eventually found situations in domestic service. The Convalescent Home housed 24 women over the age of 14. In 1942 the Home was transferred to The Children's Society and was renamed Tait Home. Shortly afterwards the Home was evacuated to Mortehoe, Devon because of the 2nd World War. It reopened after the war as Tait Home back in Broadstairs and finally demolished in 1953.
