Summary

At one time the precinct wall apparently surrounded an area of about 16 acres. The present boundary wall is of 19th century construction with the lower courses remaining in situ for most of its length. The upper wall is of coursed rubble masonry with a brick coping. The height ranges from 1.0m to 2.0m. Both the Postern Gate and the east gateway have been replaced.

[Name centred at TQ 68255746: TQ 68085756 and TQ 68105774] (1) Wall [NR] [TQ 68355770] Postern Gate [NR] [TQ 68265753] Gateway [NR] (2) The original precinct apparently occupied an area of c.16 acres, roughly square, and was surrounded by a containing wall, the lines of which are still existent. The present boundary wall is a 19th c. construction. (3) The greater part of the precinct wall appears to have been rebuilt, but the lowest courses seem to be in situ for most of its length. The wall is from 1.0m to 2.0m in height, of coursed rubble masonry with a brick coping. The east gateway has been replaced by a modern entrance, as has the Postern Gate, and at both of these sites there is no evidence of original work. (4)
