The Victorian school buildings for the Royal School fof Deaf Children, which were constructed in 1874 on the site of a workhouse and subsequently extended, were completely demolished in the 1960s and 1970s. However, a few historic features were incorporated into the subsequent 1970s school buildings, including five foundation stones dating to between the late 18th century and the late 20th century. Also still in situ are sections of the school boundary wall and gateposts, an undated stained glass window, and a pair of angels saved from the 1970s demolition of the Victorian dining room and mounted in the wall of a residential block. It is possible that parts of the Victorian foundations, and associated artefacts, remain in areas of the site that were not built upon in the later 20th century. (1)

The Royal School for Deaf Children, Margate was established in 1862. It was a branch of the London Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb which was developed by Rev. John Townsend to provide education for deaf Children in 1792. The Asylum is shown on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Edition O/S maps and the Margate Town map 8.7. The buildings have since been demolished.
