Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. Within property 9 which was located along the west side of Watling Street, a series of post holes were uncovered representing former fence lines within and surrounding the property. At its north western end between properties 9 and 10 was a fence, marked by a line of stake-holes at least 7 m long. A second cluster located to the east of the kiln may indicate the location of a boundary between property 9 and a further property to the southeast, though his could not be established with any certainty. Alongside Watling Street were one or more fencelines, all of which appear to fall relatively late in the sequence. One group of four substantial post-holes lay at the northern end of the property and perhaps continued an alignment in property 10. A second group was represented by six or more post-holes, also substantial, forming an alignment 9 m in length and perhaps centrally placed within the property along the street frontage. Several smaller post-holes belonged to an earlier alignment in the same location and there was a shorter, parallel alignment immediately to the south-west. A gap to the south of the central group of post-holes is likely to have allowed access to the property from the street. (1)
