Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of Romano-British property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. A structure was identified within property 4, the remains appear to have a mid Roman. It lay in the central southern part of the property, parallel to the path defining the southern end of the property and just under 2 m from its northern edge. It was rectangular in plan, measuring approximately 7.5 m by 3.5 m, and survived as a continuous line of shallow wall footings up to 0.5 m wide, constructed largely of chalk rubble and some flint bonded with clay. These footings would have likely provided support for a timber superstructure. There was a chalk floor within the structure and a series of shallow slots appear to have defined internal partitions. The function of this building is not clear but it is probable that it served an ancillary purpose, possibly storage. (1)
