Summary
Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of Romano-British property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. Within property 4 was a tank (possibly associated with a well located immediately to the south of it) which appears to have been in use for a long time spanning all phases of development at the site. A narrow U shaped ditch located between the tank and the river may have provided drainage. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

The tank was rectangular, measuring approximately 2.4 m by 2 m and 1 m deep, and had been lined with clay which had partially collapsed. The inner face of the clay had itself been lined with timber planks, traces of which survived around the sides, and in the base were the impressions of three parallel, more substantial timbers which would have helped support the weight of the tank, probably made of wood though possibly of lead.
