Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of Romano-British property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. Within property 3 an inhumation burial of a subadult aged c13-16 was uncovered. Aligned approximately west–east, it lay directly on the surface
of the natural brickearth and no grave cut could be distinguished in the overlying, homogeneous deposit of dark soil. This burial is unusual in that, excluding neonates, it is the only example from this site which did not lie within a cemetery. (1)
