In an area just to the north of the road which leads towards the Ritual pools, three early Roman, sub rectangular pits were uncovered during excavations at Springhead between 2000 and 2002. They were all probably dug in the 1st century but contained pottery which indicated that infilling continued into the early 2nd century. One had been affected by the subsidence of a denehole and included some mid-2nd century pottery in the upper fills. Another pit contained a neonate burial. All of these pits contained kitchen and butchery waste and another the nearly complete skeleton of an adult sheep. These are possibly associated with a circular, clay floored structure situated nearby.
