In an area just to the north of the road which leads towards the Ritual pools, two early roman hearths were discovered during excavations at Springhead between 2000 and 2002. The two ovens, one keyhole-shaped, and one dumb-bell shaped lay close to each other, oven the keyhole one with a mid–late 1st century date perhaps pre-dating the dumb-bell one. The latter was cut by pit a pit which formed part of a cluster of small pits to the north of a clay floored structure which which these ovens may be associated. All of the features to the north of the road can probably be assigned to the later part of the 1st century AD. (1-2)
