Summary

In 1892 workmen laying gas-pipes in St Leonards Street, unearthed remains of Romano-British cremations halfway between St Leonards Tower and the carriage entrance to Malling Place(House) and about 2 metres from the stone wall opposite. Arch.Cant does not mention other site details. The finds comprised a large and a small vase of Upchurch ware. Both contained calcined bones. There was also a samian patera and a 1st century black bear rim jar. Some items are kept in store at Maidstone Museum. (See also TQ 65 NE 4)

[TQ 67695716] Roman cremation burials found A.D. 1892 [T.I.] (1) Two Roman cremation burials (mid 1st c. A.D.) where found in 1892 by workmen laying gas mains "halfway between the carriage entrance to Malling House and St. Leonards's Tower," (3) and about six feet from the stone wall opposite. The urns comprised a large and a small vase of Upchurch ware, both containing calcined bones; accompanied by a samian patera with an indistinct maker's mark (early form Drag 18) and a 1st c. black bear rim jar, now in store in Maidstone Museum. (2,3,4) No further information could be obtained regarding these burials. (5)
