Excavations in advance of the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2001 found evidence of early/middle Roman enclosures and a substantial road to the north-west of Northfleet Roman villa. (1-7)

The early / middle Roman activity west of the Northfleet Roman villa included a well, a wood-lined pit, post holes, ditches and pits.

A post-hole was located 1.5m to the west of the wood-lined pit. The pit was bowl-shaped and filled with a single clay-silt deposit. Max width = 0.32 and depth = 0.10m.

The pit pre-dated the wood-lined pit. Three sherds of North Ket/ South Essex shelly ware potentially dates the fill to the 1st or first half of the 2nd centuries.

Location accurate to 1m based on available information.
