Summary

A number of Mesolithic flints, hearths and some Neolithic pottery were found during excavations at rock shelters in Stonewall Park, Chiddingstone between 1957-62. the shelters are located in a sheltered valley close to a spring. The flint assemblage included cores and microcores, scrapers, blades, flakes and gravers. These are in the J.H. Money Collection in the Tunbridge Wells Museum.

(TQ 49754223) I have found implements of Me. age and two Ne. arrowheads in the field south of Brooker's Farm. Presented to Tunbridge Wells Museum. (1) On exhibition in the museum are two N. leaf-shaped arrowheads labelledas having come from Stonewall Park. (2) In past years Lt.Col. E.R. Meade-Waldo, the owner of Stonewall, has found on the surface of fields south of the rocks a substantial numberof flints, including microcores, scrapers, fabricators, arrowheads, ofNeolithic and Bronze Age type, and fragments of polished flint axes. (3) TQ 499424. Me/Ne rock shelter excavated 1957-62. Substantial quantities of Me flints of all kinds, hearths and some Ne. pottery found. To be published in Arch Cant. (4) Stonewall Park, Chiddingstone 51/499424-503425. Face north. At the head of the valley at 499424 two rock shelters have been partially excavated by the author and have yielded Me. flints, including microliths, microcores and blade tools; there were several hearths 'insitu'. A small amount of Neolithic pottery has also been discovered. The material as a whole which has not yet been published is similar tothat found at High Rocks. (5) A series of rock faces in a sheltered valley close to a strong spring. Traces of excavation at the base of one at TQ 49974241 A selection of finds is in the Tunbridge Wells Museum. (6) TQ 499424 - 503425 Stonewall, Chiddingstone. 10 cores; 2 blades or flakes; 2 scrapers; 1 microlith and 1 'other' are in the Tunbridge Wells Museum, ex Meade-Waldo. (a) TQ 499424 Stonewall Park. Excavated rock shelter and numerous hearths. An unknown quantity of tranchet axes, cores, blades flakes, scrapers, microliths and gravers are in the J.H. Money Collection. (b) At TQ 495424 in various fields above rock shelters there have been found 9 cores; 3 blades or flakes; 3 scrapers and 1 microlith. They are in the Tunbridge Wells Museum.
