Post medieval mapping shows Strond Street, which today runs for a short length south of the Prince of Wales Roundabout and stops at the northern edge of Granville Dock, Dover, originally continued south and eastwards towards the edge of the harbour. On early Maps, including those composed by William Eldred in 1631 and 1641, the street (here labelled as 'Strand Strete') is bounded on both sides by buildings and continues along the entire length of the western side of the harbour, stopping where the land meets the sea. (1-2)
Further historic cartographic sources which depict Strond Street before it was shortened include that by Thomas Digges dating to 1588 (3) Foquet dating to 1737 (4) Hogben dating to 1769 (5)
The exact date of the absorption of this road into Granville Dock is unknown but OS mapping dating to the later 20th century still shows it running further along the harbour, it was probably cut off within the last 30 years.
