Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of Romano-British property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. Within property 5 a large sub rectangular pit was uncovered which has been interpreted as a possible sunken featured building. It was located within 5 m of the edge of the Ebbsfleet. It was approximately 9 m long, 6 m wide, and 0.9 m deep, with steeply sloping or near-vertical sides and a slightly undulating bottom. Pottery indicates a mid-Roman date. The function of the building is uncertain but it may have served for storage of some sort. (1)
