Title:Baker's Hole SM and SSSI, Area B: Report on Assessment of the Temperate Bed under HAR Programme.
Originator:Wenban-Smith FF
Date:2016
Summary:This report provides the results of work carried out in December 2015. The aim was to assess the condition of the surviving parts of the Temperate Bed at the Baker's Hole Palaeolithic SM and SSSI, to inform the development of future longer-term management plans. The focus of the work was to recover data on the current status and future stability of the palaeo-environmental remains in the Temperate Bed that are a key aspect of its national importance. The previously-demonstrated combination of small vertebrates, molluscs and ostracods provides valuable palaeo-environmental and biostratigraphic data, but the continuing survival of these remains is thought to be at risk due to physical and chemical degradation of the deposit. Work was carried out at two locations: Trench 5, where previous work was done in the 1930s and 1990s, and Trench 2, where calcareous parts of the Temperate Bed were newly identified in the 2014 field survey (Wenban-Smith 2015a) that presaged the further work reported on here.
