Brick field and later brickworks shown on the 1st four Ordnance Survey 6" maps. The site is now being redeveloped.(1)
Smeed Dean's Lower Field where London stock bricks were hand moulded and clamp fired until 1926. Bricks impressed with SD. Clay came from the adjacent clay pit. In 1926 the works were re-equipped with brick moulding machines, a dryer and a 560 feet tunnel kiln, and rebuilt wash backs. The tunnel kiln was used until 1979 when there was a reversion to clamp burning.
