Flint artefacts (mostly large blades, also some cores, a burin and some flake-tools) of Late Middle (British Mousterian) or Upper Palaeolithic (possibly Federmesser or Long Blade) recovered in late 1920s from brickearth at Bapchild, pit east of Haywood (1, 2, 4). Found in association with fire-cracked flint and faunal remains of Late Prehistoric character such as goat, pig and deer (1, 2). Flints reported at two levels: a fresher condition assemblage from c. 1ft above base of brickearth, and a more-abraded assemblage from gravelly deposits at the base of the brickearth (1, 2). Jacobi attributed this material to late Upper Palaeolithic Federmesser occupation after the Last Glacial Maximum (3). Other sources (5-9).
