During an archaeological evaluation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the development of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Dover, a number of archaeologically significant features and layeres were uncovered. Below the modern and Victorian layers apparent across the site, a series of deposits containing Medieval pottery, tile, slate animal bone and shells were uncovered in every trench. The pottey uncovered ranges in date principally from the 13th to 14th centuries, although a few residual Roman sherds were apparent in the lowest level. Is seems probable that this deposit accumulated over several centuries. The cultural material it contained, togather with moderate carbon flecking thoughout its thickness, shows that it does include a domestic rubbish element but essentially the deposit appears to be a natural accumulation.
