In 1991 an assessment of the A260 Hawkinge to Denton by-pass was underrtaken and as part of it some field walking was done. A distribution of tap slag spread was noted of either Roman or Medieval origin. (1-2)

In 1992 fieldwalking along the proposed route of the Denton Hawkinge bypass was conducted by Canterbury Archaeological Trust. Tap slag was found in considerable quantities in the plough soil. It was discretely concentrated to the west of the route. This may indicate an archaeological site in the vicinity to the west of the proposed road alignment. Slag was also found in the evaluation trenches in a signifcant amopunt acorss this field. (3)
