During excavations in 1923 for a surface layout of Betteshanger Colliery, several pits, dug in the chalk, were discovered overlain by 4-5 feet of undisturbed brickearth. A section of a larger one measured 7 feet deep by 20 feet across. This contained some bones, unidentified, and part of a horse's skull. (1)

Examination of plans held by the Surveyor's Office at Betteshanger Colliery showed the surface constructional work to be confined in 1923 to a small area centred at TR 33725302 and extending from the two existing shafts to two 'sinkers' huts at TR 33765315. Nothing further is known at the colliery or at the Dover offices of the NCB. (2)
