[Extends from TR 34155870 to TR 34855805] The New Cut (G.T.) (Extends from TR 34855805 to TR 35895746) Old Haven (G.T) (1) With the silting of the Wantsum Channel the economic life of Sandwich as a port was being endangered by the mid-C15th. However, it was not until 1548 that positive action was taken when John Rogers devised his "new cut" between the haven and the sea between Sandown Castle and the Sandhills. This was never completed and neither were later schemes. [The term 'Old Haven' is possibly attributable to the erroneous remark "The Mouth of the Haven of Sandwich, lies, as I am informed, near Two Miles East-South-East of the present one, and about Two Miles and a half from Sandown Castle" (3). No other reference applicable to it was found during recording]. Similar schemes to Rogers' are to be seen on a map of 1574 in the Public Record Office (copy in B.M.) and Labelye's map of 1736, which shows Rogers' cut on the line of the 'Old Haven', annotated as 'The Old Cutt'. (2-5) 'The New Cut' follows the line of the North Stream which is a drainage channel and shows no signs of antiquity. 'The Old Haven', is a drainage trench, water filled, and extending from TR 34805808 to TR 35875747; the remainder, extending to TR 36595704, has been filled and is now under rough grassland and crop. (6) Published survey (25") revised. (7) additional reference (8)
