[TR 14555739] Worthgate [NR] (Site of) [NAT]. (1) Regarded as of Roman origin, destroyed 1791. (2) 28 Castle Street. Grade II. Dated 1730, the building, originally the Old Kent Sessions House, incorporates part of the Roman Worthgate and City Wall. (3) The south-east side of Worth Gate, 15ft wide and the floor of a probable guard-chamber were discovered in 1961 when deep trenching for a gas-main along the south-east side of Castle Street. (4-5) In c1548 the Worth Gate was blocked, but traces of a Roman arch survive in Stukeley's drawing of c1724. In c1791 the gateway was re-opened but the old arch removed. (5)
