(TR 14945769) Belgic, Roman, Saxon occupation deposits found during excavations on the Marlowe 3 site between November 1979 and May 1980. The earliest levels revealed a group of Belgic clay extraction pits, overlain by a large post timber building. This was demolished to make way for a Flavian street and a complex of timber buildings. The rear of the Public Baths complex (see TR 15 NW 283) was also excavated. A narrow lane and timber fence separated the public baths from a large 2nd century town house (TR 15 NW 165). Overlying these levels were the remains of timber buildings. Saxon occupation was limited to three sunken-floored huts, though during the 10th century a cellared building was cut into the Palaestra of the public baths. In common with other areas in the Marlowe Car Park many of the Roman walls were robbed during the 11th and 12th centuries. (1-5)
