(TR 15585766. Sited from CAT Topo map). Longport Bar. (1) There is evidence for a bar or obstruction in the late 13th century at a point called 'Bordiche' in Longport, quarter mile from Burgate 'between the belltower and the Barton'. It was stated that this bar was in use 'tempore werre', a valuable indication of the purpose of the bars, otherwise unexplained. They must have been part of a scheme of outer defence for Canterbury.
