[TR 15275773] Burgate [NR] (site of) [NAT]. (1) Burgate or St Michael's gate, built c1475. (2) Demolished 1781-1822. (3) Marked by plaque. (4) The flint-and-mortar foundations of the southern half of the south turret of the Burgate of 1525 were exposed in 1969 (see plan)(5) by excavation on the site of the Saracen's Head (6). A similarly constructed foundation was cut through in 1975 when a sewer trench was dug from Burgate Lane to the centre of Burgate Street. The south edge was in the line with that found in 1969 and it was assumed to be part of the same structure. The turret therefore appeared to extend for an equal distance on both sides of the wall.
