(TR 15125756) The wall between St George's Gate and Riding Gate was completely restored in 1956-62. The two semi-circular bastions were constructed on the sites of Md bastions. (1) Tower No 7. One of three medieval semicircular towers between the Riding Gate [TR 15 NW 141] and Newingate [TR 15 NE 76]. It was built over a Roman angle-tower, traces of which were found by Dr F Jenkins during excavation in 1956-7. The north-east side of the Roman tower survived as a stump of flint and mortar projecting out from the city wall. It clearly abutted the wall and was of late construction, added, presumably in the 4th century. The medieval tower has been rebuilt. (2) The remains of what may have been a primitive iron-smelting furnace of mid 1st century date (or earlier) were found, indicating industrialuse of the area prior to the construction of the Roman defences.
