(TR 15055751) A semi-circular bastion was constructed on the site of a Md bastion when the wall between St George's Gate and Riding Gate was completely restored in 1956-62. (1) Tower No 6. One of three medieval semicircular towers between the Riding Gate [TR 15 NW 141] and Newgate [TR 15 NE 76]. This tower has been completely rebuilt on its original plinth, which is buried and only modern work shows above the ground. The construction of the tower was preceded by a major rebuilding of the wall on new foundations. The ground level was then raised and into this layer, in part cutting into the scarp of the ditch, the construction-trench of the tower was cut. The battered base of the tower abutted the city wall. Excavations, to a depth of 8ft exposed eleven courses of wall. Finds indicate that it was not built before c1390 at the earliest. (2) Additional bibliography. (3) Excavation showed that the construction of medieval semi-circular Tower 6 had been preceded by a major rebuilding of the wall on new foundations. Stratified pottery within the structure indicated that it was not built before c1390. (4) Scheduled monument (5)
