[Name centred: TR 16084089]. Site of a Battle between the Danes and Saxons (AD 804) [NAT]. (1)

More recently the date AD 804 is thought to be based on Sawyer charter 160 from that year, which refers to a grant from 'Coenwulf, king of Mercia, and Cuthred, king of Kent, to Selethryth, abbess, and her familia at Lyminge' of land in Canterbury 'to serve as a refuge'. (2) The charter does not mention a battle, or Danes specifically. The wording implies a percieved potential threat rather than a present danger, and may even have been the reason given for a politically-motivated grant to pro-Mercian Selethryth and/or her brother.
