Copper working site marked on the 3rd edition OS. (possibly a polluted site). The works were erected by the Queenborough CopperWire Co., an offshoot of W G Armstrong and Co. in 1904. The works consisted of two sheds 250 x 100 feet equipped with a smelting furnace and other machinery. There was a branch railway to the Chalk Wharf. The firm failed in 1908.
The site was later utilised as a glass works in 1919 by the British Window Glass Co. The firm erected two blocks of reinforced concrete buildings (built by McAlpines). The firm was taken over in 1932 as part of Pilkington Bros and remained in production until 1990s. Sand was imported via the Chalk Wharf railway.
Marked on the 4th edition OS.
Both buildings were part of the Rushenden Estate for which see Industrial Archaeology Review, Vol XXIX, May 2007, No. 1, pp31-51. (1)
