[TQ 9914 6122] About 5ft. below the present level, Colonel Hawley found, in 1926, a cobbled hearth and round it, chalk wall foundations. [Sited from given plan.] (1) In the vicinity of Stone Chapel (TQ 96 SE 2) a hearth and chalk walling were found by Lieutenant Colonel W. Hawley in 1926; they seem to represent Roman cottages alongside the Watling Street. (2) There is a scatter of Roman brick in the field in the area cited. (3)

In 2005 the Kent Archaeological Field School undertook a programme of works at the site, including field walking, metal detecting, resistivity survey, test pits, evaluation trenches and a large open area excavation to the south of the chapel. Evidence was found of Roman occupation near Watling Street. A road apparently lead from the road towards the chapel area. (5)
