Summary

Grade I listed building. Main construction periods 1200 to 1799. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is 13th century with the south chapel, porch and tower added in the 15th century. The roof of the nave was rebuilt in 1590 and that of the chancel in 1620. Grade 1 Cruciform building, with south chapel to the chancel, south parvise porch and west tower. 13th century, with 15th century windows. The south or Wickens chapel, the south porch and the porch were added in the 15th century. After a fire in 1590, the roof of the nave was rebuilt in 1592 and that of the chancel in 1620. The West tower, of ragstone ashlar, is among the most ambitious in the county and characteristically Kentish. The churchyard contains some good 18th century headstones, with sunray cherub, urn and skull motifs.

Description from record TQ 94 NE 1:
(TQ 95434938) St. Peter and St. Pauls Church (NAT) (1) The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is 13th century with the south chapel, porch and tower added in the 15th century. The roof of the nave was rebuilt in 1590 and that of the chancel in 1620. (2) In use. (3) Checked and correct. (4) 5272 CHARING; MARKET PLACE Church of St Peter and St Paul TQ 9549 22/1 14.2.67 Grade 1 Cruciform building, with south chapel to the chancel, south parvise porch and west tower. After a fire in 1590 the roof of the nave was rebuilt in 1592 and that of the chancel in 1620. the churchyard contains some good C18 headstones, with sunray cherub, urn and skull motifs. (5) St Peter and St Paul; flint, quite modest though not small in scale. The West tower, of ragstone ashlar, is among the most ambitious in thecounty and characteristically Kentish.
