[TQ 69957348] Roman Kiln (Site of) (1) Found by Jessup, 1926. (2) A potter's oven was noticed in 1926 at Hoo Junction: it lay in a deep depression in the gravel filled in with earth. The fire hearth was 4' wide, and remains of the diaphragm between the fire and the firing chamber were still visible. Immediately above the hearth was a layer of calcined material, packed with sherds of vessels which had broken in firing. Between the calcined area and the ground surface the depression was packed with broken pieces of coarse ware, c. 2nd cent., and it appears that the disused kiln was used as a rubbish pit. The kiln was destroyed before it could be excavated. (3) Probably a round or oval kiln of Grimes's type IV (see Y Cymmrodor, 41, pp.56, 72) (4) Pottery in Maidstone Museum. (5) Enquiries at the Uralite works revealed no further information on this site nor evidence of any subsequent finds. (6) The Curator of Maidstone Museum has no knowledge of the pottery from this site (viz. authority 5) (7) Additional bibliography. (8-10) Photographs (11-12)
