St Nicholas' Hospital, Harbledown was originally founded by Archbishop Lanfranc in 1084 for 60 lepers. During the 14C, following the virtual eradication of leprosy, the foundation was converted to almshouses. These were rebuilt in 1840 and are administered by the same Council of Management that is also in charge of St John's Hospital in the city.
