AL0291/025/01 GENERAL EXTERIOR VIEW NUMBER 44321 IS ON THE PHOTOGRAPH AL0960 Walmer Castle An album of 102 pages containing 124 photographs and 6 Ministry of Works postcards.The photographs come from a range of sets. Most show Walmer Castle, although there are some from Dover (see below).The majority of the photographs are interior views of the castle, showing the rooms on display or during renovations, including views of the Lord Wardens Apartment before repairs in the 1970s. There are also exterior views and some views of the gardens.There is a series of photographs of plans of the site which are now in the castle, these are generally poorly dated but account for the early creation dates for the collection. Almost all the photographs date from the 1950s to early 1970s.Page 84 is a title page for the following 2 pages of prints which show the installation of Sir Robert Menzies as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports at Dover Castle. These are mostly duplicates of a set in a Dover Castle file cross-referenced below.Towards the end of the album are sets showing the Statue of Mercury from the gardens in detail and the works compound for the castle. IC161 Walmer Castle and Gardens, Kent Two orientation illustrations, seven artworks of trees and garden features and eleven general illustrations depicting Walmer Castle and its interiors, created between circa 1990 and 2015. One of the orientation illustrations and artworks of the garden were created by Judith Dobie in 2003, whilst the second orientation illustration was created by Liam Wales. The remaining eleven illustrations of the castle's interiors are signed with the initials 'JLE' or 'JCE', but at present, no illustrator can be identified. These drawings possibly show proposed design schemes for the refurbishment or restoration of the interiors.Back-up material for the main illustrations concerning Walmer Castle held in this collection include a number of design sample boards, showing samples of wallpaper, carpet and furnishing fabrics which appear to have been considered during the refurbishment's design process.There is also some additional backup material which has not been catalogued at item level. OP00679 Walmer Castle in Kent with a row of ornamental cannons in the gardens in the foreground. The castle is one of three fortifications covering safe passage into The Downs. It is now the official residence of the Warden of the Cinque Ports. PF/WAC Walmer Castle and Gardens, Kent 808 drawings ranging from circa 1730 to 2002. There are a few from circa 1730, and several from around 1741 which show lodgings built in the 1730s. There are quite a number from circa 1874, copies of drawings by architect George Devey who built extra rooms above the gatehouse in the west bastion, in 1874. The rest range from the late nineteenth- to early twenty-first-centuries, with large numbers from the 1930s and 1990s, plus a fair amount in the 1910s, 1940s and 1980s. Across the first half of the twentieth-century, there are many drawings of floor plans, originals and annotated copies, often showing alterations or shaded to show building phases. There are a number of drawings from the mid-1960s showing improvements to the Granville wing (on the first-floor of the west bastion) and plans dated 1970 to 1971 of a fire detection system.There is a topographical survey of the castle, its grounds and Castle Meadow dated 1980 and updated in 1994. As installed drawings from 1984 to 1985 show electrical services for lighting and power, a fire alarm system, hot water, gas, heating and a ventilation system for the castle. Drawings from the 1990s include a survey of the castle's roofs, dated 1993 to 1995, and a photogrammetric survey of the basement to the keep from April 1998. Several photogrammetric correction sheets relating to Menzies Playroom date from 1997 and there are sketches of greenhouses from between 2000 and 2002.
