From early 1940 there was a Second World War roadblock at a bridge on Ratting ton Street beside Chartham Paper Mill. There are two bridges here in close proximity, over the Stour and the back stream, and it is not yet clear which was the bridge in question (probably that over the Stour). In mid May 1940, 358 Battery of the 90 Field Regiment of the Royal Artillery took guard of demolition materials at the bridge. In November 1941, by which time this stretch of River Stour had been adopted as a kind of ‘Stop Line’ this bridge was ldesignated a ‘Primary demolition.’ In February 1942, the two bridges were each assigned an infantry platoon (132 Infantry Brigade) for their protection.
