Summary

Vertical aerial photographs of 1941 show a newly laid-out road beyond the houses at what was at that point the northern end of St Marys Bay. This road was presumably intended for a housing development that may have stalled due to the onset of the Second World War. This area was subsequently developed for housing, but on a slightly different layout. This feature has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project.

The road is centred at TR 0936 2834, and extends for approximately 262m south-east to north-west. It comprises of two parallel strips of road for the first 160m leading north-westwards. The two parallel strips then split to form the perimeter of a square area, before meeting up again on the other side. The road then continues north-westwards for another 55m. Light coloured mounds clustered around the ends of the road have been interpreted as spoil heaps from the construction of the road, or mounds of road-building materials. A Second World War bomb crater of six metres in diameter is visible as a hollow in the southern corner of the square area enclosed by the two strips of road.

This road was presumably intended for a housing development that may have stalled due to the onset of the Second World War. This area was subsequently developed for housing, but on a slightly different layout. The site of this road now lies beneath The Fairway, St Marys Gardens, and Winton Way (1-2).
